History

When Jeff Hunt took over Church’s Bistro & Bar during May, 2003, he had a vision – high quality cuisine and good service set in an historic building with contemporary decor. ‘I wanted to create somewhere that you could come to on a dreary winter’s afternoon, relax within a cosy setting and feel really spoilt’.

Church’s is situated in a quiet, picturesque part of the centre of Ipswich tucked away overlooking the courtyard of St Mary-le-Tower church. Described as ‘an oasis in the bustle of the busy town centre’ and housed in a Grade II listed three-storey building, the wonderful oak beams and layout brings out the historic charm, whilst the décor blends ‘old and new’ in a tasteful way.

Church’s is split over three levels. The downstairs bar is a destination in its own right. A meeting place where good friend’s catch-up, business people relax after a busy day at the office; but more than anything, it’s romantic in mood. The lighting is low with flickering candlelight, and the unobtrusive music moves between the bustle of voices. It carries an exciting range of drinks including draft European beers such as Peroni, Amstel, Heineken, Hoegarden and Guiness are available from the pump, as are exciting new beers like Spindrift ans Aspall Cider - both from Suffolk. Adnams bitter and London Pride are also avilable from the keg. The back bar includes an array of fine spirits; with a choice of four vodka’s, five gin’s and a mix of eleven different whiskey and bourbon’s.  Jeff works very closely with his brewery and suppliers to ensure the very latest brands are in his bar.

The first floor bistro is contemporary in its feel. The immaculately polished double glassed place settings, with modernist cutlery, and white linen napkins offer a dynamic contrast against the dark wooden tables and the setting oozes class with just an edge of formality. Menus feature a blend of classic dishes with up-to-date interpretation, creative vegetarian options and innovative desserts. Frequent menu changes to incorporate the finest seasonal fresh local produce resulting in a satisfying dining experience that is bound to have you returning for more.

The wine list is extensive, made up of new world and good old classics. “I’ve always wanted to make wine more accessible and offer a good range so people can try something new - a little different to what they’d normally drink. I believe in involving the staff in tasting and training so they can really help customers is choosing a wine that’s right for them”. The wine list takes on a new look with the main body available by the glass. An additional new cellar selection of top end wines is an exciting introduction to the list.

The second floor, the newest edition to the variety of environments available in Church’s Bistro & Bar, is light and airy by day, and elegantly lit by night. Self contained, ideal for private functions and business seminars (secure simultaneous wireless Internet access for up to 16 people is available), this newly created floor is proving to be a hit for a variety of special occasions.
